Looking for a simple, colorful craft that kids (and adults!) can enjoy? This DIY “stained glass” craft is perfect for all ages. My 12-year-old son tried it, and he had a blast experimenting with colors and designs. The best part? You only need a few affordable supplies from the dollar store!
This craft is ideal for a rainy day activity, homeschool art lesson, or just a fun afternoon project.
Supplies You’ll Need
- Dollar store picture frame
- Glue (clear or white, I used clear)
- Acrylic paint
- Permanent marker
- Aluminum foil
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Draw Your Design
Take the glass out of the frame and place it on a flat surface. Using a permanent marker, draw your design directly on the glass. Think shapes, patterns, flowers, or even abstract designs, the marker will act like the “leading” in stained glass.
Step 2: Paint with Glue
Dip your paintbrush in glue, then dip it into the paint, and paint it on the glass. Use a different color for each section of your design to create that classic stained glass effect. Don’t worry about precision this is all about creativity!
Step 3: Highlight the Lines
Once your paint is dry, go back over the permanent marker lines with black paint. This gives your artwork a polished, stained-glass look and makes the colors pop.
Step 4: Frame Your Art
When the paint is fully dry, put the glass back into the frame with the painted side facing you.
Step 5: Add Foil for Shine
Take a piece of aluminum foil and cut it to fit inside the frame behind the glass. Crumple it slightly to add texture and place it against the glass. Then put the frame backing on.
Step 6: Display Your Masterpiece
Voila! You now have a beautiful piece of art that looks like real stained glass. Display it in a sunny window or on a shelf, and watch how the light brings your colors to life.
Tips for Success
- Encourage kids to experiment with colors and shapes—there’s no wrong way to do it!
- Younger children can use larger brush strokes; older kids can add intricate designs.
- Be patient with drying times to avoid smudges.
This craft is simple, affordable, and fun for all ages. Plus, it’s a fantastic way to explore color, creativity, and hands-on art at home.
