Yoga is one of my absolute favorite activities to do with kids. As a certified children’s yoga instructor and an educator, I’ve seen just how powerful yoga can be not only for kids’ bodies, but for their minds and emotions too.
There’s something really special about giving kids time to slow down, stretch, breathe, and just be. Yoga gives them space to move in a positive way, build confidence, and practice listening to their bodies. It’s not about being perfect or “doing it right” it’s about trying, having fun, and feeling good.
One of the best things about yoga is how easy it is to fit into everyday routines. It can be a morning wake-up activity to help kids get focused and ready for the day. It can be a calming bedtime routine to help them wind down and relax. In classrooms, it works beautifully as a brain break, a movement activity, or even an indoor recess option when kids need to burn energy in a positive and structured way. We used yoga during homeschool to get our minds and bodies moving at the beginning of our day. It helped us to set our intentions for what was planned for the day.
Yoga can be especially helpful for neurodivergent children. The combination of movement, breathing, and routine can support emotional regulation, sensory processing, focus, and body awareness. For many kids, yoga feels grounding and comforting a safe way to reset, release stress, and regain control when big feelings show up.
The Benefits of Yoga for Kids
Yoga offers so many meaningful benefits, including:
- Building strength, balance, flexibility, and coordination
- Improving focus, attention, and self-control
- Supporting emotional regulation and stress relief
- Boosting confidence and self-esteem
- Encouraging mindfulness and body awareness
- Teaching calming strategies and coping skills
- Promoting patience, resilience, and self-awareness
But beyond all of the benefits, yoga can also be fun, playful, and joyful and that’s one of the reasons kids connect with it so well.
Making Yoga Even More Fun With Animal Yoga Cards
One of my favorite ways to bring yoga to kids is through my Animal Yoga Cards, available in my Etsy shop and on Teachers Pay Teachers. We use these in our preschool class during our exercise unit. The kids love it. We use Beanie Babies since they are easily balanced and small for little hands to hold. These cards make yoga feel like a game. Kids balance the small animal on different parts of their body while holding yoga poses, which adds an extra challenge and a lot of laughs. It keeps kids engaged, helps build focus and concentration, and makes holding poses more exciting and motivating.
By adding animals, yoga becomes more playful, imaginative, and interactive especially for younger kids or kids who need a little extra encouragement to stay engaged. It turns movement and mindfulness into something they genuinely look forward to.
Yoga with kids doesn’t have to be complicated or time-consuming. Even a few minutes a day can make a positive difference. Whether it’s part of your morning routine, a classroom reset, or a calming activity before bed, yoga can be a simple, meaningful way to support kids’ physical health, emotional well-being, and overall confidence.
