How to Make a DIY Oscilloscope: A Fun STEM Activity That Lets Kids See Sound Waves

Advertisements

Have you ever wished you could see sound instead of just hearing it? With this simple DIY oscilloscope, you can!

This easy STEM project uses common household materials to create a device that transforms sound vibrations into moving light patterns. It’s an incredible way for kids to explore physics, engineering, and sound waves while building something with their own hands.

The best part? You probably already have everything you need at home!

Whether you’re a homeschool family, classroom teacher, or simply looking for an exciting science activity, this project is guaranteed to spark curiosity.

What Is an Oscilloscope?

An oscilloscope is a device that helps scientists and engineers visualize sound waves.

Professional oscilloscopes use electronics to display sound on a screen. This homemade version works a little differently, but it’s just as exciting!

When you speak, sing, hum, or clap into the tube, your voice creates vibrations. Those vibrations make the balloon stretch and move ever so slightly. Since the mirror is attached to the balloon, it vibrates too, changing the direction of the laser beam and creating amazing patterns on the wall.

You’ll actually be seeing sound in action!

Generally:

Every voice and every sound creates something unique!

Materials You’ll Need

How to Make Your DIY Oscilloscope

(Follow the step-by-step photos in the guide above.)

Step 1

Cut the top off a balloon.

Step 2

Stretch the balloon tightly over one end of the cardboard tube.

Step 3

Secure the balloon with a rubber band.

The tighter the balloon is stretched, the better it will vibrate.

Step 4

Attach the small mirror to the center of the balloon.

A lightweight mirror works best because it can move easily with the vibrations.

Step 5

Tape the cardboard tube to one end of the paint stick.

Tape the laser pointer to the opposite end so the laser shines directly onto the mirror.

Adjust the laser until the reflected beam shines onto a wall several feet away.

Step 6

Now comes the fun part!

Talk, sing, hum, whistle, clap, or play music into the open end of the tube.

Watch the laser light dance and change shape as the sound waves make the mirror vibrate.

The Science Behind It

Sound is made from vibrations traveling through the air.

When you speak into the tube:

  1. Your voice creates sound waves.
  2. The sound waves hit the stretched balloon.
  3. The balloon vibrates.
  4. The mirror vibrates with it.
  5. The laser reflects at slightly different angles.
  6. The light creates moving shapes and patterns on the wall.

It’s a fantastic demonstration of how energy travels through vibrations.

Mini STEM Lesson Plan

Grade Levels

Learning Objectives

Students will:

STEM Vocabulary

Investigation Questions

Ask your young scientists:

Encourage children to draw the patterns they observe and compare their results.

STEM Extension Activities

Take the experiment even further!

Music Challenge

Play different kinds of music.

How do the patterns change?

Instrument Investigation

Try making sounds with:

Which instrument creates the biggest pattern?

Voice Investigation

Compare:

Can you predict what each sound will look like before trying it?

Make Predictions

Before each test, ask:

“What do you think will happen?”

Then compare predictions with the results just like real scientists!

Why We Love This STEM Activity

One of the best things about this project is that it takes an invisible concept of sound waves and makes it visible. Children aren’t just learning about science; they’re experiencing it firsthand.

This activity encourages curiosity, creativity, observation, and critical thinking while using simple materials you likely already have at home. Sometimes the most memorable STEM lessons come from everyday objects and a willingness to explore.

So gather your supplies, build your own oscilloscope, and discover the amazing world of sound one vibration at a time! Happy experimenting! 🔬✨
